This is a book club edition from 1957 (published in 1956 in the UK by Rich & Cowan under this title but published by Ace in 1955 under the title Solar Lottery).
Bumped at head and tail of spine and also at the top right hand corner of the front and rear board. Age tanning to pages. Foxing to endpapers and half title page. The front pastedown has attached the information about this book from the SF Catalogue (see photo).
The dust jacket is complete but somewhat fragile. It is rather grubby, especially the spine, and there is some foxing. It is showing signs of wear to the extremities and is rubbed at the edges, there are several chips and faded/sunned at the top and bottom edges of the flaps. There is a large patch of damage on the front panel (sticker removed?) which has resulted in a tear which has been sympathetically repaired. Creasing to lower edges of the jacket.
SYNOPSIS: “Who will guard the guardians? In the world of 2203 AD this problem appears to be solved: power and authority are distributed on a random basis, taken and given in a chance manner that cannot be predicted.
But something has gone wrong. Ted Benteley, a skilled biochemist, has noticed that in spite of Minimax – the principle of randomness – power is gradually falling into the hands of a few. Somehow corruption has set in…”
