This is an EX LIBRARY book and has had a hard life and is generally a bit of a mess but would appear to be a scarce title. Undated but circa 1947. Published for The Crime Book Society by Denis Archer. Bumped at head and tail of book spine. Badly rubbed along boards and down the edges of the book spine. The front free end paper has been cut out leaving the remains of the page visible. Heavy age tanning to pages making them very brown, especially to the top edges of the pages. There is some foxing throughout, but it is particularly bad on the rear end paper. Initials written on front pastedown and the letter M written on the title page. The letter T is written on the rear pastedown which is also damaged – the dust jacket appears to have been attached at some point. The book is generally grubby throughout and there is what looks like tape residue on the title page.
The dust jacket has been trimmed at some point and is rather fragile and generally grubby. The corner has been cut off but the price 10s 6d is still visible. It it rubbed along the front edge and internally it has been repaired with brown tape along the front flap. Creasing to jacket spine. Edges are stained at the bottom.
SYNOPSIS: “Sam Dartnell – ‘Soapy Sam’ to his inmates and to New Scotland Yard – set a good deal in train when he emerged from his Shadwell residence and cracked a pretty crib in a distant suburb. Blackmail, which had been rearing its ugly head to provoke an extra pain in that of Scotland Yard, nourished on his booty, took on a new and startling phase – began to batten on the world of crime itself….”
