SYNOPSIS: “On the night of Joss Varran’s release from Wormwood Scrubs, his body was found in a ditch opposite the cottage which he had shared with his sister in the silent marshes in the north of the Isle of Man.
Joss had been a sailor on a car ferry between Ramsey and Preston and somewhere in his voyages had become involved in events which had made him a hunted man, not only by the police but by his partners in crime also. He had apparently endeavoured to shake them off by getting himself gaoled. His efforts were evidently in vain and his murder presented a picturesque case and a strange locale in the Manx curraghs for Inspector Knell, of the Manx Police, and his friends Littlejohn and the Venerable Casear Kinrade, Archdeacon of Man.”
