Comments & Further Information

A first US edition hardback with a 2-9 number sequence and a stated First Edition.  (At this time Random House did not use a 1 in the number sequence).  Some age tanning to pages.  The boards are sunned (see photos) and there is a bump to the head and tail of the book spine.  The dust jacket is complete and still shows the price, but is showing signs of wear to the extremities.

SIGNED by Martin Cruz Smith on the title page.

SYNOPSIS:  “In a New Mexico blizzard, four men cross a barbed-wire fence at Stallion Gate to select the test site for the first atomic weapon.  They are Oppenheimer, the physicist; Groves, the general; Fuchs, the spy.  The fourth man is Sergeant Joe Pena, a hero, informer, fighter, musician, Indian.

Oppenheimer and Groves have hidden Los Alamos on a mesa surrounded by vast Indian reservations.  It is the most secret installation of the war, the future encompassed by the past.  To it come soldiers, roughnecks and scientists, including Anna Weiss, a mathematician and refugee from the Holocaust with whom Joe falls in love.”
