First UK edition in very good condition for its age. Minor bump to head and tail of spine. Age tanning to pages making them rather brown, but still eminently readable. Previous owner’s bookplate on front paste-down. The dust jacket is complete, still shows the price, but is showing some signs of wear. Some staining internally not visible externally. .

SYNOPSIS: “Ten-year-old Marianne lives alone with her father in a big old house by the sea, locked in a prison of unresolved bitterness. He watches as she grows to resemble her absent mother – for whose sins he now cruelly punishes her. As she roams the bleak and empty coastal landscape, she clings to a child’s vision of what it must be like to be loved. Then one day a stranger rescues her from the rising tide, and she believes that she’s found a father-figure at last. But is he the ally that he appears, or do his actions disguise some more sinister agenda?”
