First UK edition in very good condition for its age. Bumped at head of book spine and some rubbing to base of spine. Age tanning to pages making them rather brown but still eminently readable. The dust jacket is complete, still shows the price, but is showing signs of wear to the extremities. There is some creasing at the bottom of the rear panel which is discoloured and is now yellow rather than white.
SYNOPSIS: “Magadan is a frozen Siberian outpost that is still haunted by the bitter memories of Stalin’s work camps. Then Magadan’s inhabitants were forced labourers, now its people have come ‘voluntarily’, the alternative being prison.
One such man is Ivan Duvakin, an exile from Moscow where his interference in party mattes and exposure of a major scandal lost him his job, his apartment and his mistress. Now he is a nameless bureaucrat in the Party propaganda machine and his tedious days are filled with preparations for the forthcoming May Day celebrations. This task takes him to a crowded airport and there his intrinsic curiosity uncovers a fur-smuggling operation… which leads him to a clash with an old adversary, General Polkovnikov of the KGB…”
