A first UK edition hardback, probably an Ex Library book, which has had a hard life. Bumped at head and tail of book spine. Rubbed along board edges. The free front end paper has been cut out at some point and the remains of this are visible. Tanning to pages, especially along the leading/top and bottom edges. Foxing throughout. Letter M written on half title (which also has a small tear at the top), and a scribble on the front paste down. Letter G written on the title page. The book feels generally grubby internally.
Some damage to rear pastedown where the jacket has been stuck down and some take residue on rear free end paper and some more initials. The flash is making foxing/grubbiness etc appear lighter than it actually is.
The dust jacket has been trimmed at some point but the price is still visible. Foxed and sunned internally. Two small repairs down front fold in.
SYNOPSIS: “There were three of them in the affair: Mark Rayburn – American oil company engineer, waiting in the Excelsior Hotel in Rome for a plane to take him to New York; Amanda Warren – also in Rome and in obvious danger, although not admitting it; strangely asking for help which she refuses to accept; and Basil Polov – powerful, menacing, gland with a deadly hold on the frightened American girl.”
