This is a Penguin paperback from 1961. The title was first published in 1930. The book is in poor condition. Slant to spine. The covers are very grubby and there is a crease across the top and bottom corners of the front cover and the top left-hand corner of the rear cover. The covers are scuffed and chipped and have generally seen better days. The front cover is stained on the centre panel. Age tanning to pages making them rather brown but still eminently readable. It looks like the book may have been damp/wet at some point as there are water marks to the first few pages at the leading edge and there is some staining to the bottom of most of the pages (see photo).
Please note: The photos make the covers look more white and clean than they actually are. The white panel is very yellow.
SYNOPSIS: “A mangled body lying on the floor and a severed head staring from the centre of the empty room was what the police found in a closely guarded room in a Paris gambling house. Police had watched the doors, the window could not have been entered, and there were no secret passages giving access to the room. yet a criminal had entered that room, committed the murder, and escaped, all within the space of ten minutes, without leaving a clue and without being seen by anyone…”
