This is an undated White Circle paperback circa 1945. The covers are very grubby and have numerous chips and rubbing/scuffing to the edges. Crease to bottom edge of rear cover and across the top and bottom corners of the front cover and down the cover adjacent to the spine. Spine slanted with some damage at the base. The front cover has become detached for a few cms at the bottom. Internally the pages are extremely tanned. The book has been repaired at some point in its life by means of tape being applied at the gutter margin to re-attach the covers. The photos make the book look cleaner and brighter than it actually is.
SYNOPSIS: “St Orran Cove, five miles from Penmouth Harbour had the reputation of being one of the quietest and most restful villages in the West Country. But on that night when Valetta Hosking arrived on leave from the WRNS it was eventful as peace-time New Year’s Even in Piccadilly!
It was Valetta who first discovered the body of Hella Gruber, a sensation to be followed by the finding of a drowned body…. The mystery is investigated by Inspector Arnold of Scotland Yard and his old friend Desmond Merrion, now head of a section of Naval Intelligence.”
