A First UK edition paperback in very good condition for its age but the covers are showing some signs of wear. Single very faint crease to the book spine and a half-inch crease across the top right-hand corner of the front cover. Internally, there is fairly dark age tanning to the pages but the book remains eminently readable.

SYNOPSIS:  “Long ago, in the Island of the Mighty, Bran the Blessed cast a spell preserving Britain for all time from the invasions of her enemies, keeping her forever in the rule of magic…

Now, in the nineteenth century, the young Queen Victoria is the mightiest mage in the British Isles. But her throne is under threat, for someone has stolen the Rules Britannia, the magic tome that holds the secret strength of queen and country. Victoria is powerless to halt the unknown foe who is summoning demons of evil to destroy her.

Only two people can help her: Brihtric Donne, the world’s most renowned sleuth and his companion and chronicler Dr John H. Watson (earmarked by the lusty young queen as her consort). So Donne and Weston begin a hunt that will lead from the haunts of Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde to the Mound of the Baskervilles to a confrontation with all the darkest magic a would-be monarch’s mad ambition could conjure up…”
