Comments & Further Information

A paperback edition in very good condition for its age. Originally published in this edition by Penguin Books in 1950, this is a much later, undated printing. Age tanning to pages making them rather brown, but still eminently readable. The covers are showing some small signs of wear, notably a faint, quarter-inch crease to the top left-hand corner of the rear cover and a similar matching crease to the bottom left-hand corner.

SYNOPSIS:  “The first volume of short stories chronicle the adventures and mishaps of Father Brown. Small, round-faced and engagingly innocent, Father Brown is a Roman Catholic priest from East Anglia. He also happens to be a top-hole detective, possessing that rarest of all gifts – an intuition that never fails.

The criminal he seeks is Flambeau, a master of disguise, fleet of foot and clever enough to have confounded the police in at least three different countries. But even Flambeau must surely fail to outwit the gentle man of God whose name has become synonymous with detective-storywriting at its most entertaining and enduring.”
